ACQUISITION: “In January of 2013, I was having lunch with a friend in Los Angeles. He mentioned a Jewelry Heist script that I might be interested in because of my former work history on the film THE ABYSS, as well as my interest in scuba diving. When he told me it had something to do with the thieves finding a secret escape route through an underground cave network, I was intrigued. The script was sent to me. It was a fast and engaging read and I felt it was a film I could shoot efficiently with powerful visual and dramatic effect. I was familiar with Emmy Award Winner Michael Reaves previous work and immediately wanted to strike a deal.” –Phillip Darlington
In the first week of March, Darlington met with both authors of the screenplay. They struck a deal and the rights were acquired to the project.
During Darlington’s research, he met Doug Billings through the Southern California Grotto of the National Speleological Society. Doug owns a cave in Arizona that we eventually learned would be ideal for shooting 65% of THE DARK ZONE on location. A date was set in early May to head out to the cave and perform a lighting and camera test. Four actors and Four crew headed out early in the morning, with Pro DSLR cameras and lenses and camping gear. Arriving at the cave entrance by 3:00PM, we shot into the night and early the next morning.
The results were culminated into a few test scenes which were eventually incorporated into the presentational trailer on the home page of this site.
LOGISTICS: Budgeted at $1 million, The Dark Zone is designed to be filmed in Arizona, New Mexico and stages in Los Angeles. We have a shooting script that is receiving strong interest from well known actors and production companies in Los Angeles. We are currently developing funds to produce the feature and hope to begin shooting in the summer of 2013. We are confident that with a proper cast we can hit the ball out of the park. Consequently, we have been fortunate enough to gain the interest of private investors.
In early 2005, the Moneyshot Productions team formed an LLC. A Private Offering Memorandum has been tailored towards the needs of production. Since then, we have been successful in accruing start up funding. We are confident we will meet our production budget goals in Summer of 2013.
